“Youths are jobless, farmers and citizens are suffering from drought. There is no water for people to drink and THE elected representatives, instead of paying attention to these issues, are going to Ayodhya,” he said indirectly taking a jibe at Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray.

He was speaking at an event organised by Pawar Public Charitable Trust (PPCT) of dedicating the ‘Constitution Pillar’ on the occasion of ‘Constitution Day’, which was celebrated on Monday. Baramati MP Supriya Sule was also present.

“Today, many districts in the state are reeling under drought and there is no water for people to drink. People are jobless and worried. Now, in such a situation, elected representatives should stand by the people, but in spite of that, the Ayodhya issue was dug up. I don’t want to get into Ayodhya issue or Ram Janambhoomi issue. But if the country is being taken into a different direction from the main issue, then I think something wrong is happening,” he said.

On the eve of Diwali, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced that he will build a 151-metre-long statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya.

Taking it up, Pawar said, “A chief minister of a state says that he will build a bigger statue. He can do that, I have no doubts about it. But today, in this situation, whether to build a tall statue or help the drought-affected people is the question. An attempt is being done to divert all from the main issues and from genuine issues.”

“Today, some people in country talk about changing the constitution. Recently, a minister from Central government openly said that ‘in Karnataka, they had come to change the Constitution and to correct it’. You (people) have been given strong rights by the constitution and that they want to take it away.

Hence, they make such statements but this country will never accept it. If someone tries to attack the Constitution, then this country does not accept it and we have seen this in the past as well,” the NCP chief said.
