Mulshi tehsil in Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency is considered to be perfect for monsoon tourism due to its scenic beauty, unclimbed mountains, dense forests and abundant rainfall. The Mulshi dam built on the Mula river can be considered as the first major water project. When the colonial administration acquired the land for this dam, many small villages and houses were displaced. Senapati Bapat's fight for the rights of farmers and their rehabilitation is a prominent historial event, also known to be the the world's first anti-dam movement.
Without making use of any weapon, he led the movement by uniting hundreds of people for the the fight against the violation of human rights in the process of development. This is why Pandurang Mahadev Bapat, popularly came to be known as ‘Senapati Bapat,’ and a voice of the poor. The existing Mulshi Dam is owned by the Tata Group of Companies and the electricity generated from it is used for the city of Mumbai. Spread across steep hills and valleys, the dam is a major tourist attraction in the monsoon every year.
