Right next to the Purandar Fort, on another hill stands the Vajragad Fort which is indeed a sight to behold. Although it is small in size, during the Shivaji period guard posts were set up on the fort. Mostly Vajragad was used a watch tower of Purandar fort as it had a great advantage in defeating the enemy who marched on Purandar. In a way, this fort was considered to be the thunderbolt of Purandar, just like the thunderbolt of Indra. Recognizing this advantage, the Mughal Sardar Diler Khan first captured Vajragad and then they built a scaffold on which huge cannons were mounted. Purandar's eastern ramparts could not withstand the constant barrage of cannon firing directly on the Purandar fort from an equivalent height and the Marathas were then finally forced to dismount and engage in hand-to-hand combat. At last Purandar fort witnessed the sacrifice of Murarbaji Deshpande and alas the fort fell into the hands of the Mughals.
